Ijumaa! It’s Friday and we’re back in Bwejuu. We had such a great time at this secluded beach last week that we couldn’t wait to come back.
Bwejuu is a tiny village in southeast Zanzibar, about seven kilometers north of Jambiani. It is easily accessible from Stone Town via Dala Dala (about two hours) or private hire. Our favorite guest houses are the Pakacha Bungalows – where we’ve become regulars. Packacha provides us with a much-needed weekend sanctuary from the bustle of Stone Town, and is the perfect place to relax in the sun, hunt for shells with the changing of the Indian Ocean tide, and study Swahili. Not to mention the guys at Pakacha cook up some of the best food we’ve had on the entire island… just be sure to order several hours ahead of meal time (we think they might actually head out to fish for our seafood on a per-order basis). My favorite is the chile fried octopus – I had it three times last weekend :)
